Ceramics & Pottery

This course of study is designed to provide learners with hands on therapeutic experience in the medium of clay. It is both inclusive and flexible according to the interest and ability of individuals. Throughout the course, learners will enjoy designing, drafting, experimenting and refining their work in clay through hand built forms including coiling and slab, as well as wheel-based throwing. In addition, our learners will understand and comply with health and safety requirements using materials and equipment applicable to this craft, correctly. Learners will also be encouraged to reference the work of Artists, designers and craftspeople as well as incorporating design aspects from other cultures.

These qualifications provide the foundational knowledge of materials, glazing, and firing essential for success in the global ceramics market.

  • Studio Pottery: Independent Potter or Ceramic Artist creating unique functional ware or sculptural pieces for galleries and craft fairs.
  • Industrial Production: Production Thrower, Mould Maker, or Kiln Technician working within large-scale manufacturing facilities or heritage potteries.
  • Design & Development: Ceramic Designer or Glaze Chemist, focusing on the aesthetic design of tableware or the scientific development of finishes and clay bodies.
  • Restoration & Conservation: Ceramics Restorer or Conservator, specialising in the repair of antique porcelain, heritage tiles, and museum artefacts.
  • Education & Community: Ceramics Tutor, Workshop Leader, or Community Arts Coordinator, sharing technical skills in schools or private studios.
