Home Cooking Skills
The B-Tec Food & Nutrition course is designed to provide our students with valuable life skills, while fostering creativity in a fun and supportive environment.
The course is available in both Level 1 and 2. Both levels focus on building independent and confidence in the kitchen through hands on cooking experiences. This gives the students the opportunity to learn a huge variety of new skills from chopping and mixing, to meal planning and grocery shopping.
Each week there is a small amount of theory work that goes alongside the practical tasks. Recipes are reviewed by pupils to evidence both their opinion and review of the recipe. This done alongside referencing the ‘Eat Well Plate’ throughout so that pupils can associate the food ingredients with the correct nutrition groups.
The aim is to provide our students with skills that promote self-sufficiency and empower them to make healthy choices with their nutrition.

Potential Careers
Graduates of a BTEC in Home Cooking Skills develop a practical foundation in nutrition, food safety, and kitchen management that serves as a launchpad into the broader food and service sectors. While often a stepping stone, this qualification proves you have the essential techniques and confidence required to work in professional environments where food preparation is key.
Potential career paths include:
- Hospitality & Catering: Kitchen Assistant, Commis Chef, or Catering Assistant in schools, hospitals, or local restaurants.
- Health & Social Care: Cook or Support Worker in residential care homes, preparing nutritious and balanced meals for residents.
- Childcare: Nursery Cook or Childminder, focusing on early years nutrition and preparing healthy snacks for children.
- Community & Education: Community Kitchen Facilitator or Food Workshop Assistant, helping others learn basic cooking skills and budget-friendly meal planning.
- Retail & Production: Delicatessen Assistant, Bakery Assistant, or Food Production Operative within the food manufacturing industry.
- Entrepreneurial: Small-scale Food Producer or Market Stall-holder, specialising in home-style bakes or prepared meal kits.
